Welcome to The Third Half
Why The Third Half?
People often ask where the name came from.
The short answer is that I made it up.
Partly because technically it doesn’t exist (think about it), and partly because I was becoming increasingly irritated by the idea of the “third quarter” of life. You see it everywhere: the suggestion that life can be neatly divided into four parts, with the third quarter devoted to slowing down and the fourth devoted to... well, demise and death (let’s not dwell on that).
The whole concept feels wrong to me.
Perhaps that’s because, as I edge towards 60, I still feel about 30 most of the time. Perhaps it’s because some of the most interesting things I’ve done have happened in the last few years. I’ve changed careers, gone back into education, started coaching and mentoring, and launched a media platform (chuckle) that didn’t exist before. None of that feels remotely like winding down.
If anything, it feels like the start of another chapter.
That’s why I prefer the idea of a Third Half. In sport, the final whistle might signal the end of the contest, but it rarely marks the end of the conversation. People gather afterwards to analyse what happened, tell stories, celebrate, commiserate, argue about refereeing decisions and occasionally solve the world’s problems over a drink. The game may be over, but something valuable continues.
That’s the spirit behind The Third Half.
It’s a place for conversations about People, Planet and Progress, and the sometimes awkward, often fascinating ways those three things collide. It grew out of The Tech Ledger, which focused heavily on technology and sustainability, but over time I realised the technology was not always the most interesting part of the discussion. The people were. The choices they made were. The impact those choices had on communities, organisations and the wider world was.
So while you’ll still find discussions about technology, leadership and sustainability, you’ll also find stories about reinvention, resilience, creativity, culture, sport, music and the occasional wonderfully bad idea. There will be interviews with founders, executives, campaigners and creators. There will be essays and reflections. There will probably be references to sport, music from the 1980s and 1990s, and the fortunes of Airdrieonians.
What you won’t find is a thought-leadership echo chamber or a collection of articles claiming to have all the answers. There is already more than enough certainty on the internet.
The Third Half is built on the belief that good conversations matter, that progress should benefit people as well as balance sheets, and that curiosity becomes more valuable, not less, as we get older.
Most of all, it’s based on a simple idea: life doesn’t move in neat quarters, and there isn’t a point where growth, contribution or reinvention suddenly stop. If you’re still curious about the world and your place in it, you’re probably already in your Third Half.

Who It’s For
The Third Half is for the fractional, the curious, and the quietly restless.
For:
Fractional and portfolio executives shaping their next chapter.
Founders, change-makers, and leaders who crave purpose without pretension.
People who still believe in progress - but know it starts with empathy and ends with action.
Anyone who enjoys a bit of wit with their wisdom.
You don’t have to agree with everything here - in fact, disagreement keeps it interesting.
This isn’t consensus. It’s conversation.
Who’s Behind It
Scott Hamilton - host, writer, fractional (and fractured) exec, sustainability grad, ex-rugby coach, and unapologetic Airdrieonian. Dad, gig-goer, and recovering corporate leader with a fondness for cheese, chaos, and conversation.
Scott brings the stories and the scars.
Happy Ishaku keeps it grounded and (mostly) on time.
Together, they prove you can take progress seriously without taking yourself too seriously
