Ken Deeks had an idea. Twenty-eight years later, he’s still sleeping on the floor.
I should say upfront: there’s no impartiality here. I sit on the Glasgow committee for Boycott Your Bed, and I want more people to get involved. So rather than making the case myself, I asked the man who started the whole thing to make it instead.
Ken Deeks.
He’s funny, self-effacing, one of the best storytellers I’ve had on this show, and in a few unexpected moments, quite moving. We talked about what nearly three decades of doing this has taught him about people, about the assumptions we make when someone finds themselves in trouble, and about the extraordinary people who show up every day to help.
There’s football, snoring, a surprising acting career, and an on-camera promise from Ken that I fully intend to hold him to.
But running underneath all of it is one simple question: could you give up your bed for one night?
Boycott Your Bed takes place on 2 October, with events in Glasgow, London, Manchester and Leeds.
