If The Tech Ledger Made a Time Capsule
If The Tech Ledger had to bury a time capsule today, what would we put in it?
Every generation thinks it’s living at the height of progress. Then the future shows up and laughs.
The 1980s gave us the Betamax. The 2000s handed us the Blackberry. And today? We’re clutching our iPhones like they’re eternal treasures — but give it 20 years and someone will call them “retro bricks with too many updates.”
So here’s a thought experiment for the Tech Ledger community: If we buried a time capsule today, what should go inside? Not because we’re serious archivists, but because tech history is basically one long blooper reel.
Exhibit A: The Phone That Rules Our Lives
It feels obvious, doesn’t it? Drop an iPhone 14 Pro Max in there. In 2075, someone will dig it up and say:
“Wait… you actually carried this around? Everywhere? And paid $1,000 for the privilege?”
Imagine explaining charging cables. Or why we thought 5G was the future when holographic calls will probably be the norm. That’s the fun of it — something “indispensable” today will look laughably clunky tomorrow.
Exhibit B: The Once-Hyped Tech That Flopped
No time capsule is complete without a flop. For that, Betamax earns a spot. Or maybe Google Glass, those futuristic specs that made you look like a cyborg intern.
Remember the hype? “This is the future!” And then reality: this is embarrassing.
Every era has its shiny mistakes. They tell better stories than the stuff that actually worked.
Exhibit C: The Cultural Souvenir
Not everything has to beep or charge. Imagine sliding in a football programme from Airdrie’s finest day, or a Taylor Swift concert wristband, or even a printed boarding pass (kids of the future: ask your grandparents what “printing” was).
Because tech doesn’t just capture progress. It captures moments — what people cared about. And sometimes, what they cared about looks even funnier than the gadgets.
Exhibit D: The Apps That Ate Our Time
How could we forget TikTok? If someone opens the capsule and finds a phone preloaded with TikTok, they might finally understand why productivity cratered around 2020.
Or maybe Slack — the app that turned work chat into 24/7 anxiety. Nothing screams “early 21st century office culture” like endless threads of “just circling back.”
These apps defined us — for better or worse. Which makes them perfect candidates for burial.
The Bigger Picture: Why This Is Fun
We’re not really burying a box, of course. This is just a reminder that tech is never as timeless as it feels in the moment.
The Walkman was once the ultimate flex. The DVD player was “revolutionary.” Now they’re museum pieces — or worse, clutter in your parents’ attic.
So asking “what would you put in a time capsule?” is really asking: what from today will make us laugh, cringe, or scratch our heads tomorrow?
Your Turn: What Goes In?
Here’s where the Tech Ledger community comes in. If you had one slot in our imaginary capsule, what would you toss in?
An iPhone (today’s crown jewel, tomorrow’s fossil)
A Betamax tape (because not every invention deserves a sequel)
A football programme from Airdrie’s greatest day (proof that not all tech is digital)
A pair of AirPods (the most losable invention ever)
A USB stick (already looking like an artifact)
A Zoom meeting recording (so the future can suffer too)
Or something else entirely?
What would you bury in The Tech Ledger capsule?
An app, a gadget, a cultural moment, or just that piece of tech you secretly hate?
Drop your pick in the comments, or send it in anonymously if you prefer. At the end of the month, we’ll collect the best entries, write them up, and publish the ultimate “Tech Ledger Capsule List” for everyone to enjoy.
